What to do in Port Arthur

Me and my mates are planning to visit the place in mid January 2021. Do we have to go through the tours for the tickets or can we just get the tickets from the counter like any other sites? Any idea for the ticket prices if we get from the counter?

A place that is stunning to look at but it really is a place with a terrible history and story to tell. Such a contrast of beauty and sadness as well as shame all in the same place. Felt so sad for all that was done here. A must to visit.

Second time we have been here. Much better when you spend a decent 4-5hrs looking around. Guide was great, as was the cruise. Happily go back a third time.

Have always liked this historic site. Last visit was 4 years ago and we did the ghost nite tour last time. This time we did the day walk at our own pace. It was a sunny day in late autumn

I definitely didn’t expect the Isle of the Dead tour to have me in tears of laughter but our amazing guide Graham delivered such an incredibly impassioned, lively and witty tour that I actually had to wipe a tear or two away from giggling so much. I’ve always struggled to really get immersed in historical sites like this, thank you Graham for bringing the stories to life so vividly. Your passion for your work as a historian was the highlight of my trip to Port Arthur.

Fantastic experience today at Port Arthur for the first time. The 45min guided walking tour was fantastic and our guide was very informative. The boat tour wasn’t as good, but was still cool to see the two islands and also a submarine!! Plenty of walking to do and so much to see. Lots of information provided at all the sites. Spent five hours there - could’ve been more. Impressed.

So much history and beauty. Do the free guided walk if you can, it will make the visit more memorable. Love that they encourage visitors to enjoy the orifice in the gardens. We feasted on delicious apples and the freshest most delicious walnuts straight from the tree. If foraging is not your thing the cafe/restaurant does great food at good prices.

This is my second time coming here and I absolutely love it. The grounds are spectacular, truly something worth the visit. My first time coming I did do the walking tour which was a little long and I got a bit bored, so this time decided to just explore without the tour. The buildings have adequate information points around the map provides a guide as to wear to go. Unfortunately missed the boat tour, but would recommend if this is your first time. Allows you to see Port Arthur from a different perspective. Overall I always enjoy my time here and I certainly suggest it if you’re travelling Tassie!

Very well preserved historical site with lots of history and things to see. Entry included an introduction tour and a harbour cruise which was well worth experiencing. Can get very crowded at times.
