Historic Site Visitor Centre, Port Arthur
Great tour guides and information handouts. Facilities are clean and accessible. Interesting history probably need 5-6 hours to see everything. Includes free cruise.
I can't say that the site was beautiful or impressive unless you are impressed by ruins. I found the visit to Port Arthur quite entertaining despite my general dislike of the museums; for me it was more of an educational experience than sightseeing. The convict history in Australia was unusual enough to keep me interested for at least a couple of hours and I would spend more time there had we come earlier. However, I won't go there again any time soon. That place is like a book - once you've read it, it will take some time before you feel like reading it again.
Port Authur was so good we are going back today Did night ghosttour now day tour
Australia started with prisoners and no visit to Tasmania is complete without a stop at Port Arthur. The museum and site are well maintained--but overwhelmed with tour buses during season. Self-directed touring is possible. Guided tour groups are quite large.
The prison is a historic site that is good for those with family / kid friendly place that isn't too serious, but if you are looking for something of significance like Alcatraz or Auswitz this is not the place.
if you want to fully immerse yourself in Convict history. plan for 2 days. your ticket allows this. you walk a lot. lots to see and photograph. awesome experience and you can not say you went to port arthur without doing this site.
Great adventure not to far from hobart
Robert the tour guide was awesome. Spoke for 40 minutes about everything you need to know about Port Arthur Historic Site that makes the tour essential, hilarious and informative. The boat trip that goes for 20 minutes is enjoyable, it's a great opportunity to take photos. The fireplaces inside the Seperate Prison was a nice touch of warmth from the cold. There is a memorial for the Port Arthur massacre that cannot be missed either. Stunning place for remembrance. There is a few other gems to watch out for, it's a great day out. A star is removed for the expensive entry fee and cost for the 30 cents tomato sauce at the cafe.
We had a great experience at the Port Arthur site. There's simply SO much to do there, so much time to look through it all! We didn't get time to go through even half of the site in the 5 or so hours we were there. The cafes weren't anything special, but not poor either. The tours were really good, especially the ghost tour was a lot of fun! Through the whole experience we learned a lot about the history of both the prison, and simply the era around the time the prison was open. Very interesting! It's definitely worth doing the walking guided tour (comes included in your ticket), the ghost tour cost extra, but was worth it too. The tickets etc weren't particularly cheap, but they were still value for money because of the sheer amount of things to look at! The tickets were a little confusing to know which to purchase, but the lady at our hotel helped with that for us. Young kids might get bored fairly quickly, there is lots of reading to do. There's huge grass areas, I'm sure there wouldn't be any problems if the kids kicked a ball around or something!
Really well presented. Informative staff. Don't waste your money on the ghost tour unless you're under 10 years old
