What to do in Port Arthur

Me and my mates are planning to visit the place in mid January 2021. Do we have to go through the tours for the tickets or can we just get the tickets from the counter like any other sites? Any idea for the ticket prices if we get from the counter?

It's a real eye opener to see how our convicts were treated and to hear and read about some of the more colourful characters.

I really enjoyed the port Arthur experience, looking at all the old buildings and hearing the old stories, I would definitely visit again but for my next visit more vegetarian options on the menu would be great

PLEASE DON'T BRING YOUNG CHILDREN HERE! You're ruining the experience for everyone else. This is a fantastic open air museum, so much to see and do! We loved wandering around and exploring every building. So much information everywhere, it was almost impossible to read everything (but it was so exciting and interesting!). They put a lot of effort into the historic site. We enjoyed the tour and short cruise and would come here again. It's a bit expensive (78$ for two adults) but it was worth it. Expect to walk a lot and get sad, angry, overwhelmed and nostalgic, depending on where you are on the site. The silent prison was great to visit, however lots of annoying loud children and disrespectful visitors disturbed the atmosphere. You're supposed to be quiet in there to understand what it must have been like back in the day. I will never understand why people bring their young and screaming children to places like this, where others pay high fees to learn something and then have to listen to the screams of spoiled children. Same thing in the gallery/visitor center museum and during the cruise. Babys and children screaming, talking, running around. I won't rate the place lower because of that, but it surely impacted our experience.

Very interesting place to visit. The tour was educational. The grounds are beautiful to walk. If you take a tour through the grounds the ferry ride is repetitive unless you are stopping at one of the other islands.
