The food was only average and the place is surprisingly small. We ordered the shikiri bento, the chicken katsu curry and the tsukune chicken meatballs. The bento had 6 different little food compartments served with brown rice. The food was at room temperature and all was average tasting, some being too salty and sweet and others being too dry. The chicken katsu curry was pretty good except that the curry sauce soaked all of the rice so it turned out to be quite salty. The tsukune chicken meatballs was the least tasty because the flavors were not balanced, being both too salty and too sweet. We also ordered the matcha latte which was good since it wasn't too sweet and it had cute designs on them. But unfortunately the matcha flavor was not rich enough and it tasted a bit diluted. Overall the flavors of the dishes were not great and they didn't taste very fresh. This is a place you would go to for the experience and the looks of the dishes rather than the taste.
Great food – had their chicken katsu curry – chicken was perfectly cooked! Their matcha cake was very good too! The cafe is small and has limited seating but is quiet to have a nice meal.
Very cute little Japanese cafe and restaurant. Now open for dinner. They have a great selection of Japanese comfort food. No sushi. But great chicken katsu curry and other stuff. Love it. Friendly people and cute setting.
One of my favourite Japanese cafe! Been here few times for lunch only. Never tried the breakfast nor the dinner. Everything that I had tried so far - TASTY! Highly recommended if you’ve happened to be around south Melbourne. They quite busy on the weekend. Will come back here for dinner next time
Oh how I wish I lived closer to this Cafe! A real niche find situated in the lovely South Melbourne. Cute dining options inside the store and on the street, great service and very tasty home style food.
The Chicken Katsu Sando was amazing, light and crispy on the outside; whilst the chicken was tender and juicy on the inside. The fruitiness of the Katsu sauce and mayonnaise are a classic pairing. After having the first one, the gluttony inside almost kicked in to want a second one. The smoked trout Ochazuke was well balanced, perfect on a cold winter morning; comfort food that will warm your soul. The warm dashi broth was perfectly seasoned and tasted clean and sweet. The cafe is nice and cozy, staff were attentive and friendly. The food was amazing and I would not hesitate to order these again. I will be adding this to my list of regular places to visit when I come again to Melbourne.
I had the prawn tempura udon and matcha latté, and both were fantastic and flavourful. It has that nice 'homemade' feel about it. The staff service was really friendly as well. Even though there were a few groups of people waiting for a table, we didn't feel rushed, which was nice, as that sometimes happens at other establishments. Pricing is on a slightly higher end, but worth it as the food is fresh and very well made.
Such a special and wonderful little Japanese cafe. The staff are wonderful and all the offerings are great. I particularly love the hojicha latte, especially on a cold and wintery day but they also do iced versions. Make sure you get a piece of cake too!
Great place, hidden treasure. Chicken Katsu is very good, seems to be using some special breadcrumb.
my favourite getaway. friendly staff, warm hojicha and lovely food
