Lunch today at Hanuman was my first in a while. Sadly, I must report that I will not be in much of a rush to return.
Prices here are on the high side for Darwin, which the owner undoubtedly feels are justified given its good reputation and his admirable commitment to paying staff appropriate wages. However, I feel that the place is resting excessively on its laurels.
The food was a mixed bag. My lamb korma came in an excellent non-generic sauce, wonderfully spiced, but tough and large chunks of lamb that barely submitted to the spoon and fork provided.
My friend's chicken biryani, great chicken, average rice. We received an unannounced yoghurt side dish, yet couldn't quite work out where it belonged, inexplicably and unsuitably sweet. The roti was very good. Overall, perhaps 3.5 stars for food.
Worst of all was the service, which was mildly officious, detached, and indifferent. We could not say that the waitstaff were rushed off their feet, as the place was not crowded. A mango lassi remained forgotten until my friend pointed out its absence. No enquiries along the lines of 'how was everything?' 2 stars for service.
At the prices, I expected something special, and today this was simply not delivered.
