We went there for birthday celebration The cheese honey is nice, but the octopus is absolutely no flavor, I only can taste the olive and tomato. octopus itself no texture. Chicken was alright. I was hoping there will be birthday writing in dessert dish, but not.. Disappointed

The Apollo is somewhat of a Potts Point institution that begs locals and tourists alike to experience their take on Greek food and service and for Mother’s Day we decided to treat our wonderful women, geek style! Sittings here are popular so book well ahead. We were only able to secure an early sitting at 5:15pm for our group of five. Potts Point is also notorious for parking so arrive early if you want to find something kerbside. We were greeted by a friendly maître de who showed us to a table at the back of the dining room. This was an OK spot however as the night progressed and got busier the close proximity to the toilets and kitchen meant that foot traffic past our table got quite heavy. Disappointingly at one stage the staff carried a table through the dining room requiring diners to duck for cover as the legs brushed close to a few heads! Prior warning would have been nice. Otherwise the dining room had a comfortable ambiance with low lighting and music that started off soft and at a low volume but seemed to increase in volume and intensity as the evening progressed. The service is good for the most part. Our waiter was efficient but probably didn’t cross the threshold of amazing. If you leave a restaurant believing you have made a new friend in your waiter thats a good sign they are really putting in the effort. We also found the delivery of food to be a little cumbersome with staff often reaching across the table in front of our faces instead of placing each dish from the side. There was a slight drop-and-dash feeling to the service. As far as the food is concerned we decided to go all-in on the Apollo’s Feast Menu. At $85 per head this is a lot of food and is for groups of four or more. The dishes are served sharing style starting with some classic grazing options of olives, pickles and mullet roe dip. A small surprise again in the service was the additional warm pita bread we ordered was delivered to the table in a take away box not on a plate. It was provided at no extra charge which I guess made up for the less refined table presentation. Following close behind was the Saganaki (grilled cheese) and Calamari. Saganaki is a pan grilled cheese in this case basted in a honey and oregano syrup. This is a traditional Greek dish and it’s delicious. It felt like you needed something to eat it with but I think traditionally it is served by itself. The calamari had a lovely marinade/ sauce but was let down slightly being a little chewy. The salad seemed to come out by itself when it would have been nice to have with the main dishes of chicken, fish and lamb shoulder. The grilled snapper was the stand out for our group. A beautifully prepared half fish with tender juicy flesh and a delicate sauce that was enjoyed by even the non seafood loving members of our group. There will always be too much food on this menu to comfortably devour and we ended up taking a doggy bag for our lamb shoulder and potatoes as we were only able to keep space for the desserts. The deserts consisted of Avgolemono pie and walnuts in filo pastry with coffee cream. The latter is fairly basic and resembles a style of baklava with a light coffee cream. The former is a take on a traditional style of Greek cooking best described by a review in the Collective Hub: “For those of you not well-versed in Greek, avgolemono means ‘lemon sauce’. It’s a concoction of lemon and egg that’s usually used to describe lemony soups and sauces, but Jonathan Barthelmess of The Apollo has named one of his famed desserts Avgolemono Pie. It seems mysterious at first, but once you get below the dish’s olive oil crumble and meringue topping, you’re met with a luscious dollop of lemon curd, and you realise the dessert lives up to its name.” The food overall is classic comfort category which means for some it can also sit a little bit heavy, but overall the quality was fresh and the flavours were unique. In conclusion it is worth heading to the Apollo for some great food at a reasonable price.

I have had two incredible experiences with Apollo. First one was with a date, three years ago, and we had the most amazing time, everything was perfect and exquisite, so much so that I have continued to recommend it. The latest was a surprise dinner for my mother, for her birthday. I could not be there for the occasion, so I coordinated with Apollo and they organised the most amazing lovely experience for her- it was unforgettable. She said the food, the environment, and the service were the best she has had, with very special thanks to Andrew who took care of her and our friend. Once again, I could not recommend this place more. Everything is delicious, relaxed, rich, and very satisfying. Thank you once again Apollo. I will continue to go, and send people your way.

Etienne was our waiter and was 5 stars! All of the staff are very welcoming and provide excellent service. The food came within a good amount of time and was cooked perfectly. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is for the cocktails, I would say that the flavours were great I would order again. We had called weeks in advance for a table and were only able to get 5:15, I found this frustrating as when we arrived and departed for 7:30 there was still a lot of empty tables and it looked like we could have dined later instead. Covid sucks this place is awesome.

Amazing food, amazing service. We had the private dining room and had a great experience. Serving staff took the time to explain each dish. The saganaki and lamb shoulder were the hilights.

Went there with my partner to have dinner. Beautiful place to go on a date. Service was awesome. We ordered Spanakorizo rice and the Octopus, it was DELICIOUS!!!!! The flavours where out of these world. Food arrived to the table on perfect timing. Wine was also really good. Definitely will recommend this restaurant.

Excellent food. We only had Octopus and Spanakorizo. It was delicious. Such an amazing flavour. The service was really nice from the beginning. They fit us in without a booking but definitely recommend to book in advance cause the place is busy and is not a surprise now we tried their food. The rest of the dishes looked awesome as well. Waiters & Waitress always on top of everything, very professional customer service.

Made enquiries to host a 'no expense spared' dinner for 20pax at The Apollo. Was offered a 6pm seating time, vacate by 8pm (or a 8.30pm start time which unfortunately wouldn't work) Unreasonable seating limit of 2 hours to feed 20 people which I commented on. No answer, no effort to compromise or allow flexibility. Have taken our business to another venue who are happy to take our $6000. Will not waste my time here again.

Disappointed. Can't say much about the food as we had to cancel our booking. Staff originally had been very accommodating and allowed us to update our booking from 2 to 4 people. However, only an hour and a half before the booking they called to say it's no longer possible. Would have been fine if they had declined the original request from the get go to enable us to make other arrangements. But the lack of care factor and unwillingness to even rearrange the booking left us feeling our custom is better spent at the many other great Potts Point eateries.

Description

The Apollo is an Australian Greek restaurant that draws on the joint heritage and professional success of Jonathan Barthelmess in partnership with Longrain's Sam Christie with a keen eye to detail and the flavours of the mediterranean. Located in Potts Point, the elegantly minimalist refurbishment includes both banquette and outdoor seating, and a chef's table sitting adjacent to the kitchen - not unlike the family dining table, as a transition between dining room, kitchen and pantry.
