Used to be one of my favourites, but prices have been increased to the point where it is ridiculous (10% weekend surcharge = $6 for small coffee and $38 for Mexican Cousin with Bacon!!!). The staff were friendly and attentive, the decor is great and the coffee is consistently good. I used to live nearby and would regularly get the Mexican Cousin, but it is now smaller, sweeter and much more expensive than when I last had it. Summary: Fine dining prices without the Fine Dining. There are now much better options in Melbourne.

Coffee here is exceptional! Their non traditional breakfast is really good - the steak sandwich. Also got the traditional breakfast from the 'eggs on toast' section, it's literally eggs and toast plus the extras you get(bacon and mushrooms). Nothing more nothing less - too dry.

With many positive comments regarding this cafe. I couldn’t add more. The service and the staff were super helpful and friendly. The have indoor and amazing and beautiful outdoor seats. The drinks here were super delicious and tasty. I’ll be back for sure

Terrible service. We came with friends.they told us on the phone that we can, but they started to complain after we arrived. This was unexpected actually. I have never seen such an awful client service. On top of that we asked for 6 teas, their response was that they don't have enough tea pots so we should change our order.. I mean if you have table for 20-30 people how come you can serve tea for only 6 people???? Anyways. This place is a joke!!! I do not recommend anyone to be here.

Visited St Ali for my birthday as I've been wanting to go for ages. It absolutely delivered! The food was incredible, great service and such a cool space. Can't wait to go back.

I had extremely high expectations of this place but was overly disappointed by the general customer service, table service etiquette and the outrageous pricing (Disclaimer - I cannot comment on the food as we only ordered coffees). 1. The moment we got to the cafe, the gentleman at the front greets us with a "hello, how are you going?" and my partner cordially replies with "Yeah good, can we get a table for 2." He responds with "I said how are you going" and then proceeds to take us to our table. His remark was extremely snarky and as first time customers, this is not how we expect to be spoken to. Nevertheless, we brushed it off. 2. As we sat down, we spent around 10 minutes looking around for someone to serve us. We noticed a QR code on the table, so we thought we'd give it a go. The QR code doesn't work (we were advised later that you can't order through it). My partner gets the attention of a waiter (looks to be more senior). This waiter was extremely blunt and not helpful at all. My partner is lactose intolerant and when he asked if they served lactose free milk the man responded with a blunt "no". He did not suggest alternatives and when we probed him about alternative options he could only recall "oat milk" - I'm shocked that you do not know the other blends of milk you serve. He was also ill prepared when we had to order. He got my partners order wrong, spent a few minutes looking for his booklet and came to the table a few times to note our table number. 3. The coffees were served separately. This is quite odd as generally you would serve coffees at the same time - it's basic table service etiquette. I've been to places that were probably 2 star cafes and they still managed to master this. 4. As we go to pay, we are quite surprised that two small coffees cost just under 13 dollars. (5.80 for one and 5.50 for the other). I got the receipt and noticed they also charge for a "service fee of 10%". Overpriced coffee and a service fee on top is extremely outrageous. Top Paddock, Kettle Black are high end cafes which do not charge this ridiculous price. As another reviewer noted, it is simply "Fine dining prices without the Fine Dining." If you're looking for a sign as to whether to go to this place, this is it - if it's your first time visiting and you are curious, then go and experience it yourself first hand, but be cautioned of the pricing and service fee (we weren't warned). If it's just coffee you are after, the coffee is average and for the price, you can find better alternatives elsewhere - trust me.

Visited St. Ali for the first time in about 18 months and have to admit I left a little disappointed after excellent previous experiences. Disagree with some of the reviews the prices have changed - They’re still the same as they have been in past - but I do think something else has changed. The cafe has lost a lot of the vibe it used to have with the renovations - Gone is the noise of conversation, or the sound of the steam wand working overtime just over your shoulder. The menu is a bit complicated and feels limited for breakfast - it has merged with the lunch menu but could be a lot clearer. My impression was that the quality of the food seems to have dropped - even my coffee was a bit meh. Which was a surprise as there used to be one thing that I could always rely on at St. Ali... Hopefully I was just there on an off day!

Coffee was great. Ordered an almond latte with a caramel slice. You must try the slice. Soo good.

I've wanted to visit St Ali for years, the food and coffee are highly revered! And I'm so glad that I finally did! It has a nice warehouse feeling dining room with lots of tables, hopefully you shouldn't have to wait too long. The menu is huge and you should find something that should pique your interest, even if you live a gluten free or vegan lifestyle. As far as coffee goes, you're definitely in luck, you can stick with the orthodox blend for a daily sipper or be adventurous with their varied single origin roasts and their organic beans too! I will definitely visit again, I am counting down the days already! Enjoy!

Description

Artisanal coffee and inventive brunches in a trendy warehouse space with edgy, distressed decor. Come with us on a journey through space and time ... Like the discovery of most commodities, coffee was highly prized, mostly misunderstood and appreciated for its medicinal purposes. We’re talking about the 15th century, here. Fast-forward a few hundred years past the Y2K and you’ll see the beginnings of the ST. ALi Family in South Melbourne in 2005 placing a strong ethos on quality beans and unique brewing methods. Yes, we take our coffee very seriously- serious enough to be named one of the most pretentious things ever in a Buzzfeed listicle in 2013. But, that’s not all we’re known for. Head Barista, Matt Perger placed first in the World Coffee & Good Spirits Championship in 2014; Second in the 2013 World Barista Championship for his redial, rethink on filter coffee- a paradigm shift in the category- as well as winning first place in the 2012 World Brewer’s Cup. Matt Perger and his coffee disciples or boy band counterparts have toured all over the globe starring in pop-up cafes, master classes and merchandise signings. Now, you’ll find our family has expanded from our warehouse-chic flagship in Yarra Place to Sensory Lab, Clement, Tom Thumb, Plantation and Deadman Espresso. But that’s not all… Food is pretty damn important too! We thought that cafe food could be more than just some avocado on toast, and serious coffee deserves serious food. The early days saw pan-Asian influences from Benjamin Cooper (now at Chin Chin and Kong), dishing up sticky wings, grilled kingfish heads and zingy glass noodle salads next to your plate of poached eggs and corn fritters, ultimately inspiring “ST. ALi Nights,” which John Lethlean described as, “stimulating, thought provoking, and (for me) one of the most successful bits of hospitality-industry lateral thinking Melbourne has seen in quite a while” Today, we have Executive Chef Andy Gale in charge of the pans. Gale is known for his dishes with punny names, Oxford commas and wizard-like abilities to make offal sought after in a breakfast- clear signs of his British upbringing and culinary path under Pierre Koffmann, Bruce Paul and Gary Rhodes. With Gale at the helm, food is no second fiddle; he has turned up the heat to create a truly inspired hybrid restaurant-cafe menu, so good that in 2013 he bought home the Best Food prize in The Age Good Cafe awards. In the next chapter- twenty fifteen and beyond- we will be moving into our new kitchen, turning the food up yet another notch and re-birthing ST. ALi Nights but this time with Gale leading the pack. Things may be a little left of centre at ST. ALi, but never done by halves.
