1st Fl 177 Brunswick St 3065, Fitzroy
We caught the last bopstretch. It’s not the best ventilated place, but we were there for the music. Charge is $30 not $25, so just take note. You can buy food and then bring it in. Gig started after 8pm, closer to 8:30pm and doors open at 7:30pm.
Fast bebop jazz with four truly remarkable musos, guitar, alto saxophone, drums and double bass. Frantic , fast, tight and well balanced, innovative and free ranging: all good jazz should be this good. It’s a cosy venue with a small but valued drinks list. Drop into this one when your jazz fiend friend needs a hit.
This is one of the best “real” jazz venues in Australia. If you're into jazz make certain you pay a visit. Check their website for what's on because they occasionally play hard jazz only for the hard core aficionados but mostly you'll be alright. Wednesday's Bobstretch is always good.
Excellent small live music venue, cosy and close to band. Accessibility - large No. of steps. Couldn't see lift, ask venue if unsure.
Highly recommended for a traditional jazz experience. Small room. Booths & tables. Intimate. And of course the music. The beebop/trad on Tuesadays is wonderful. Long list of wine and spirits. I love that it is a cafe but only has two coffees; long black or short black.😀
I love Uptown Jazz Cafe. I was there again last night to hear the Mark Fitzgibbon Trio; brilliant! Whenever you go, you know you will hear some of the best instrumental jazz and improvising musicians in the country. The vibe is authentic, 80s, 90s, Fitzroy cool; remember when the only things in Brunswick Street were the Black Cat and Mario’s! Music lovers paradise!!
Venue has a little class and the band was ok, but they were out of most of their gin and were not skilled at making cocktails. I think that the cover charge was too much.
A great Jazz venue with great artists. Loved the intimate ambience
Website (checked in the afternoon) stated $20/25 cover charge but was charge $35 at the door (website was updated prior to the evening event), unethical! Another unethical instance was we bought a bottle of wine for $56 (Cab Merlot) and it tasted bad. My friend upon inspection on the label, the wine was actually $5 at Dan's. It was a 10x markup! We checked all the other wines on offer and they were all 10x markup! They have certainly lost a few customers.
Less formal than some of the other big jazz clubs, with some authentic musical talent on display. You’re unlikely to beat the ticket prices.
