The (proper) Restaurant has an interesting menu, but right on down the end and you're spoilt for choice with a variety of beautifully made (packaged) salads and coffee, soft drinks and beers. I had a fab Flathead with chips, and my partner a crazy good homemade burger, that was thick and juicy, with lettuce and fresh tomato in a soft bun and chips. Sit in or outside, right where you can get the next tour. Wholly recommended.

Great spot to sit down and relax with the family and have lunch while your at Port Arthur. The staff are friendly. A little expensive but the pies and sausage rolls are really nice. And you can get sandwiches, cakes, drinks, coffee and alot more.

When you have a captive audience and no competition there is no reason to try too hard. Fortunately this cafe doesn't take that view. The food was fresh, plenty of choice for all tastes and budgets and the service team were so happy even though it was busy.

Unfortunately the wait for food was over half an hour so we decided to stop just down the road for food.

During our self guided experience of the Port Arthur site it began to rain droplets of ice water accompanied by a nasty cold artic wind. Me, like everyone else, decided to take shelter in the only cafe on site. This meant there were approximately a hundred people cold, wet and hungry for food. So hungry that people were huddled in corners eating off their laps as there weren’t enough tables to go around. After waiting for 10minutes for a seat, I saw a table opening up as the group decided they were brave enough to venture back out into the cold. I leaped at the chance like a vulture jumping onto a mouse. I didn’t realise that part of the port Arthur experience was a real life reenactment of what it would have been like to dine in the prison mess hall, as I got barked at by what seemed to be the prison warden of the cafe. Apparently you’re not allowed to sit at an uncleaned table. How was I meant to know it would be cleaned? As there were several uncleared tables scattered around the mess hall. More inmates made the wrong decision in joining my disciplinary action as they to wanted to sit at the same table. More orders were barked, “NO MORE THAN 6 PEOPLE PER TABLE”. The other inmates looked confused, they too didn’t realise they’d paid for the real life experience. The prison food was nice but it’s safe to say that the prison definitely has rehabilitation properties as I won’t be making the mistake of dining with the prison warden again.
