Historic Site Visitor Centre, Port Arthur
At the risk of sounding very un-Australian, I have to say that the port Arthur site did not live up to my expectations. I understand that it is a site if grave cultural importance many years ago and in modern history, but I felt that aside from the introductory tour, the boat ride was very boring (basically the ride takes you around a few islands, but really it is just to pick up customers who paid for the Isle of the dead tour). The ruins are interesting, but you are always consulting the guidebook to work out what went on. Given how far it was from Hobart, I would advise to give the port Arthur site a miss (I was hoping it was more like Pompeii, Herculaneum, palatine hill etc). There was local gin tastings in the 1830 restaurant that day, and my partner and I agreed, that was probably the best part of the day.
Fantastic experience! Guides were fun and knowledgeable. Whole place is full of engaging interesting info. Walking tour and boat tour was great. Cost of entry while not cheap is worth the expense.
Very informative. Skimming through the information still need a full day there. Did a ghost tour which was fantastic. Some of the stories makes you wonder more about the site. So much too take in, take your walking shoes, there's a bit of a distance to walk around.
A very beautiful but eery spot. Well worth a visit. We did the boat tour which was quick and informative. Would have loved to have done the walking tour too but we ran out of time. You could easily spend the day here. Lots of history!
Excellent place to visit. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Rob is the best tour guide I have ever met. Brilliant commentary. Thanks also to Caitlin and the others at Port Arthur.
Visited this 40 years ago and remembered it was not a money grabbing exercise. We wanted to do a brief visit but minimum entry is $40 each. It did entail a 40 min talk and half hour cruise but we didn't want that.
Make sure you prepare a whole day to explore this beautiful historic place. The tour was amazing, our tour guide Andrew took the tour into the next level. I was mesmerized by the beauty of this place. It was an awesome experience. Highly recommend.
A cracker of a day combined with a very knowledgeable guide = a great experience. Add the harbour cruise and we were on a winner! Tip is to pre-book the Isle of The Dead tour.... Don't expect vacancies on the day you visit.
Fantastic, educational & such an important historical site for Australia & England. Spent 6 hours wandering with our kids & it wasn't enough. Loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What am amazing piece of history. Definitely need 2 days to enjoy properly.
