I see a lot of excellent reviews, but there are few that properly show how it really is here.
Upon arrival you find yourself in what looks like a candlelit Viking inspired medieval dungeon/bar.
We were then made to wait for our reserved table for over 15 minutes.
Once seated, I had the complimentary skål which they said was mead but was more or less a cocktail sweetened with honey.
As someone who actually consumes a significant amount of various meads on a regular basis, why does a place that calls itself Mjolner only have one variety of mead beer on tap (which tasted rather off for some reason)? There are plenty of good meads produced here in Australia but, instead, you're treated to an overly extravagant cocktail, whiskey, and wine list.
Onto the food…
A Norse inspired banquet was offered. Inspired is the key word here, and a banquet it was not.
We shared the entrée “Charred Octopus Tentacles” but there's one problem with that name; it was tentacle not tentacles. It was delicious and cooked to perfection but little more than a morsel.
We were told we could easily share the main but also that we should order two sides along with it since it did not come with any. They weren't wrong. The rather expensive main “Beast Feature - Lamb Chump” was about 300 grams of lamb on a large bone alongside a smear of puréed eggplant and crispy kale. This, also, was perfectly cooked, tender, delicious, but also a pitiful portion for a shared plate.
The two sides we ordered “Baby Potato” and “Caramelised Roast Pumpkin” were seemingly more substantial than everything else. I couldn't fault them in the slightest.
We did not stay for dessert, so onto everything else.
Before starting your meal you're offered a “weapon”, namely a selection of custom looking knives with wooden or horn handles. They certainly look nice but they are terrible to use. The knives are all too heavy (my Bowie knife at home feels much lighter) and quite blunt. My partner had trouble cutting through the tender meat with her knife and the skin on the potatoes proved to be somewhat resistant to their cutting.
From what I could see (through all the nicks in the blade), they were sharpened to a profile around the time they were bought and haven't seen any form of sharpening since.
I cannot fault the staff, they were very attentive, helpful, knew the menu well, and vaguely dressed and styled to fit with the theme.
The modern music kills the ambience, instrumental or live music would add so much more to the overall experience.
Just under $150 later, this proved to be an expensive disappointment.
