Something might need to change to restore this place to its former glory..
Arrived for dinner on a bustling Thursday night, but the two of us were promptly seated and given menus. I had had a look at the menu online before going so I knew exactly what I was after, to which the ordering process was seamless and fast. Likewise, the arrival of the food was blisteringly quick as well. Overall the service and speed were strong, but unfortunately the food didn’t match the service.
I didn’t expect big things, given that in this day and age there are many many other options that are cheaper, smaller and of much higher quality, but I thought I had to give them a second chance after a bit of a shabby meal 5 years ago. Being renowned for the worlds best pizza (albeit a number of years ago) and being a household name when it comes to pizza in Melbourne, Gradi do a busy trade every night, and all credit to them for being able to build up such a strong name for themselves..
Onto the food, I had the Margherita, which I noticed straight away as it hit the table that there were large pockets of oil in the centre of the pizza, however the crust was beautifully done. My friend had the capricciosa which he had the same issue with, and we both quickly realised that the centres of the bases had gone soggy. Furthermore, having only ordered less than 10 minutes earlier, we were shocked at the quick arrival of the food, and found that it went cold extremely quickly, even though the restaurant on the whole was quite warm (same went with the chips we shared).
The saving grace was the parmesan, I love love parmesan so that was a pretty good bonus to put on top of the pizza and absorb some of the grease. Another bonus was when it came time to pay, the guy at the counter accidentally added my Crown rewards card twice which doubled my points, helpful when I’m trying to retain my tier before the end of the month.
Overall it was okay, and I can see where they have little spurts of greatness that truly shout out what they are all about, but I think for a true representation of their food I would prefer to go to their other Melbourne locations, where its not as commercialised and “faux”. It was expensive too, we had only two pizzas, chips and a soft drink each and it was near on $100. I think bringing back some more authenticity in their food would do wonders for their repertoire, but given that they’re busy nearly every night, they don’t need business advice from me.
