I'm surprised people have rated this 5 stars. Personally I found myself feeling ambivalent about the atmosphere of the place. Why? Because the art is very confusing it's too hectic and not aligned with the "cyberpunk " label people have mentioned already if that's what they're going for. The food wasn't even close to Japanese cuisine at all.
Excellent service and quality food
A very tasteful place, with a sense of Japanese Cyberpunk, the food are fresh and tasty. I wonder whether the founder are Japanese Aussie hybrid, because the entire style hybrid the traditional Japanese style and western funky style perfectly. Strongly recommended.
Very tasty, good Japanese
Not very good service
Great value. Eye fillet was insane
Brilliant. Tasty. Fun. High energy. Would be a regular if I lived in Hobart.
Went to Bar Wa tonight. I arrived around 22:20. The food itself was good so as the beer. However, still something need to be mentioned. First did not get the chopsticks when the food was served. Second, after my first-time ordering, as I would like to add something to the order, I was told the kitchen closes at 23:00, when the time was 22:55 (my bad, I did not know the kitchen usually closes at 23:00, otherwise I would probably not choose to go to bar wa.). Third, I did not get all the food I ordered in the first place. Really bad experience have to say.
Cool and hip japanese inspired share plates. Great vibe and good service. A good late night option for food and drink.
They were fully booked online but when we called/emailed them a few days in advance, they were still able to squeeze our group in. Ambiance and food were great except for the platter, which was a bit underwhelming. Good selection of drinks as well, but hope we could get a better description of the “Feed Me” option for large groups. It could be included in the menu maybe and could list the items included for easy reference
Was honestly let down and disappointed, just arrived in Hobart and was craving fresh Japanese seafood. We ordered the various share platters and was disappointed with the lack of Japanese authenticity. The meals were very expensive and would not recommend. Lovely staff however.
Woah... If you eat anywhere in Hobart. Make sure it's here!! Such beautiful flavours. So many unique dishes to try. And epic Sake menu if that's your Thang! Be sure to make a booking as I was lucky to get a walk in seat when I went. I highly recommend going for the oyster happy hour from 4-6pm 💪✌️
Great atmosphere, good service. King fish was amazing. I think food is good but minus the ramen. Ramen was extremely disappointing. Specifically requested for noodles not to be soft and to be hard, had a discussion with wait staff about it. The noodles came out super soft! Broth wasn't great either. Far from Japan ramen, I have no idea what others are talking about.
This place is amazing, make sure you book. Lots of free parking on side streets as well. We went for the happy hour (half price oysters with a drink), and the oysters were really good - give the sake tasting paddle a try. The yellow fin tuna appetiser was delicious and incredibly fresh. the okonomiyaki was probably amongst the best in Australia, and as good as most in Japan. I loved the potatoes (there is plenty of sauce, so no need to go easy). The pork jowl is very fatty but extremely tasty as was the miso butter mushrooms. Highly recommend this place.
Funky with personality. We did lunch on our last day in town. I am glad we did. It has nice people offering great service. It was our first time and the menu and drinks were explained with good detail. The drinks list needs more than one sitting! The food was wonderful and size perfect. My only regret is that I would have loved to stay longer, unfortunately business called. Thank you team Bar Wa Izakaya, you can rest assured that when we are back later in the year we will be in for a long lunch.
Quite busy, the staff always ask me to sit outside.
My family and I absolutely loved this place. It has a great vibe, excellent service (quick, friendly and helpful), interesting drinks (I LOVED the umeshi tasting flight) and super-tasty Japanese food (the pork gyoza and yakniku platter were absolute standouts for me, but everything else was excellent too).
I enjoyed the mushroom with shiro miso ,unfortunately we couldn't try the famous ramen it wasn't available, but what we ordered it was great to eat.
Great venue and welcoming staff. Fantastic up stairs function room. Casual yet professional organisation allows for the proper handling of parties, special occasions etc.
The kitchen reliably produces delicious fare. We live interstate and make it a point to come here whenever we’re in Hobart.
