Malabar South Indian Restaurant in Darlinghurst
4.3
/ 551

Shop 1 274 Victoria St 2010, Sydney

I went to Malabar on a Friday night with a group of 7. All the starters were excellent, I especially recommend the samosas and the tandoori tikka. All the mains we ordered were very good as well. We didn't have anything particularly spicy (but I'm sure they could make it hotter). The food was prompt, they were well staffed, and they accommodated us when our group expanded to 8 (adding a table). With a bottle of wine, 7 mains, 5 starters, lots of naan and rice we paid about $40 per person. *note, given the 'bar' in the name one could mistake this place for having an actual bar. It has a decent wine list but no bar.

Lal Qila Restaurant
3.9
/ 602

351-353 Cleveland Street Surry Hills 2010, Sydney

I think that Lal Qila might have the best Pakistani food in the world. And that includes Pakistan. That title previously went to a place in Chicago (Sabri Nehari - also a great place if you're ever in Chicago), but ever since Lal Qila opened up, I haven't gone to any other Pakistani restaurants in Sydney. Make sure to try the Bihari kebab (excellent), the lamb boti, and/or the chicken karhai. They're all standard South Asian staples, but Lal Qila does them all spectacularly. Personally, I judge Pakistani restaurants by the quality of their nihari - which is sort of like judging an American restaurant by the quality of the steak. And once again, Lal Qila is a winner. On par with the best nihari in Karachi. Bottom line - on the off-chance that there might be better Pakistani food somewhere in the world, I can say with fair certainty that this place is DEFINITELY the best in Sydney. And I've recruited many of my non-Pakistani friends to agree.

Green Mushroom

/ 214

163 Glebe Point Rd 2037, Sydney

My partner and I are always on the look out for new vegetarian/vegan haunts around Sydney and will travel a great distance to try something new. I spotted the Green Mushroom in passing on Glebe Point Rd and had noted the large VEGETARIAN sign. (generally a good indication they'll have something we can eat). When we arrived, the friendly staff greeted and seated us in a quaint and beautiful eating area with warm and thoughtful decor. Aside from being a nice place to sit, they offered us a separate menu that had all the vegan options listed (yay!) and there was SO much to choose from. The dishes we ordered were delicious, came out quickly and didn't leave us with that heavy, over-full feeling that indian food often does. Super friendly staff, lovely atmosphere, beautiful food. Loved it, will be back for sure!
